The Tokara Islands became the gateway to an island universe for me.The first time I saw a ceremony embodying the joy-bringing spirit (Mare bi to) that comes from far across the sea was at Akusekishima in the Tokara Islands. That experience was a trigger for me to continue recording religious festivals which are strongly influenced by the view of life and death in the southern islands.
Islands isolated geographically are divided by the sea. At the same time, they are also connected by the sea. Stars floating in the universe comprise constellations, while at the same time, each of them has its own, unique name and shines individually. However, at the very moment when I try to add some meaning to islands and stars, they disappear. I am still not sure if I can take photos of stars as they are, and show what I see on the islands as it is. But I would like to take photos of the radiating light from people living on the islands before I fall into the darkness inside thoughts.

吐噶喇列島は、自分にとって島宇宙への入口だった。海の彼方からやってくる来訪神＝まれびとの思想を体現した儀礼を初めて見たのが、吐噶喇の悪石島だった。あのときの経験が、南島の死生観を色濃く残す祭祀を記録し続ける契機となった。
地形的に孤立している島は、海によって隔てられていると同時に、海によって繋がってもいる。宇宙に浮かぶ星々も、そこから星座が形成される一方で、それぞれの星は固有の名を持って一つ一つ輝いている。しかし、島も星も、ぼくがそこに意味を付そうとした瞬間に目の前から消えてしまう。星を、ただ星として撮ること。島で見たあらゆる物事を、そのまま写し留めること。そんなことが本当に可能なのか今もまだわからないのだが、思考の暗い陥穽に落ち込む前に、島に暮らす人々から発せられる光を、一本でも多くのフィルムに焼き付けたい。そうした思いの涯てに、この『流星の島』がある。
