S-KEN Punk Old Dicks

I shot in a street portrait style.

Let me tell you a little about Mr. S-Ken, the subject. He is a musician and a music producer who will turn 76 this year ( in 2023) and is affectionately known as “Punk Grandpa “. While in NY in the 1970s he experienced the rise of punk rock at CBGB and after his return to Japan he presided over “Tokyo Rockers”. He was a legendary rocker who laid the foundation for that scene in Japan. I have known of Mr. S-Ken since I was a teenager.

More than 30 years later in 2016 , I met musician Kan Takagi at my teacher’s 60th birthday party when I was a DJ. Mr. Takagi introduced me to Mr. S-Ken and that was our first encounter.
Around that time, Mr. S-Ken resumed his activities as an artist after a long absence, releasing a new album and writing a memoir.

I was just looking for a new subject after the release of my first photo book “The Blues of Monochrome “ in 2016 and when I saw Mr. S-Ken I instinctively knew that he was the one. I felt an overwhelming energy and a bottomless power coming from this man, who was about to turn 70 and was instantly drawn. He has a tremendous charm. I felt it.

The first shoot was in Shimokitazawa, which is typical of ROCK. Rhythm is the key to a street photo session, so if the groove doesn't match, it's going to be a mess. In that respect the two of us were in one mind and worked in harmony right from the start.

After a while, Mr. S-Ken's friend Yoshiyasu Katayama, a writer living in Asakusa, joined us as a navigator for this photo session, and since then we often went to downtown areas. I, who was born in Osaka and have lived around Shinjuku and Shibuya, and Mr. S-Ken, who was born in Omori, wandered around the East side of Tokyo like eager young boys , full of curiosity and took lots of pictures, resulting in the completion of this photo book.

I hope you to get big energy from this “punk grandpa”.

この作品は2016年〜2023年にかけて撮影した、18.590ショットの中から厳選した写真88枚で構成されたもので、ストリート・ポートレート的な手法で撮影しています。

被写体のS-KEN（エスケン）さんの事を少し紹介すると、今年（2023年）76歳になるミュージシャンで音楽プロデューサー、一部で”パンクおじいちゃん”と呼ばれ親しまれてる人物。
1970年代のニューヨークはCBGBなどでPUNK ROCKの勃興を体験し、帰国後、日本で最初のパンク、ニューウェイブのムーブメント ”東京ロッカーズ” を牽引した伝説的ロッカーとして、私は10代の頃からエスケンさんの事は知っていました。

それから30余年後の2016年、DJ時代の恩師の還暦パーティでミュージシャンの高木完さんから紹介されたのが直接の出会い。その頃、エスケンさんは長い沈黙からアーティスト活動を再開、ニューアルバムをリリースしたり、回想録を執筆したりとアクティブに動き始めたタイミングでした。

私は、2016年に最初の写真集 ”モノクロのブルース” を発表した後で何か新しい ”エモノ” を探してる時期。そんな時にエスケンさんを見て、「これは撮ってみたい」と直感しました。満ち溢れるエネルギーと底知れぬパワー。月並みな表現ですが、目の前の70歳になろうとしてる男にとてつもない魅力を感じたのです。

最初の撮影はロックらしく下北沢から。ストリートのフォトセッションはリズムが命だから、グルーブが合わないとグダグダになってしまいます。その点でふたりの息は最初からバッチリ決まってました。

しばらくして、エスケンさんの旧友で浅草在住の作家、片山喜康氏がこのフォトセッションのナビゲーターとして参加してくれるようになってから下町方面へ行くことが多くなりました。
大阪出身で新宿、渋谷辺りで暮らしてきた私と、大森出身のエスケンさんは好奇心に踊る少年のように東京のイーストサイドを徘徊し撮りまくった結果、この写真集が出来上がりました。

ここには”呑んだり、歌ったり、病気になったり、カッコつけたり”する76歳の男が写っているわけですが、瞬間を味わいながら目一杯生き、終わりは静かに消えてゆく。私が描きたかったのは、そんな成熟した大人の世界なのです。

“パンクおじいちゃん”のエネルギーが皆様に届きますように。
